Acme Volume Profile Pack

The Volume Profile studies are the heart and soul of the Acme suite. There are 5 essential types of general profiles – range, bar/intraday, session, micro-composite and composite – each designed to analyze a successively longer span of time, volume and price action:

  • Range profiles allow traders to instantly profile specific sections of a chart
  • Bar/Intraday profiles individual bars, blocks of time, blocks of volume or even price ranges
  • Session profiles for any RTH or ETH daily session
  • Micro-composites for profiling a number of sessions over an intermediate term, such as a few days, a week, a month or even longer
  • Composite profiles, finally, are designed specifically to cover the long haul – a few weeks to several years
Additionally, the Acme Volume Profile family contains 3 specialty price-volume studies:
  • Volume Profile Evolution: designed specifically for viewing the big-picture auction as an unfolding story told over days, weeks, months and years
  • Volume Value Channel: allows the study and tracking of just the value area without the profile
  • Volume Profile VPOC: allows the study and tracking of just the per-bar volume point of control and value area

Most of the profile types can be used on any style of bar built into NinjaTrader 7 such as minute, range, volume or Renko, etc. Each type is implemented as a separate study/indicator so you can easily mix and match to fit your personal trading style, and their features are described in detail below.

Acme Volume Profile Range

Part drawing tool, part indicator and full-on useful, the range profiling tool adds instant bar-level precision to your profiling strategy. It really is as easy as one keystroke and two clicks of the mouse to create exactly the profile you need. Watch the screencast. Available in the Pro Edition only.

  • The range profile is all about precision and thus uses tick data by default, though minute data can be used on minute bars for long term charts. And unlike other kinds of NinjaTrader drawings, your ranges can saved and reloaded between Ninja sessions.
  • Profiles can be displayed in any of the Quad Styles.
  • Profiles can optionally display the traditional 1-sigma value area, and value area widths are configurable.
  • Profiles can display volume at price (contracts/shared traded) on the profile in 2 different styles.
  • Once drawn, range profiles can be moved left or right on the chart using the <> (greater than & less than) keys and resized using the SHIFT + <> keys.
  • New profiles can be linked to the current bar when drawing or any time after drawing using a control button in the top right corner.
  • Profiles can face left or right.
  • Shows an optional volume and range summary below each profile as well as important level markers, including the profile high, midpoint, low and the VPOC.
  • As with the other Volume Profile studies, all colors and widths can be finely tuned to integrate into your existing charting scheme.

  3. Now press the < or > key on your keyboard (without holding the SHIFT key) to move the profile one bar to the right or left.
  4. To resize the profiles, press and hold the SHIFT key, then press the < or > key to expand or contract the profile by one bar.

How to Cancel a Range Drawing

If you decide not to place a range profile on your chart after all you can cancel it by either pressing the escape key or by moving the mouse pointer off the chart.

Acme Volume Profile Intraday

While the other profile studies in this pack focus on profiling days, weeks and even years’ worth of volume, the intraday study focuses on much smaller time frames. You can now profile individual bars, blocks of time, blocks of volume or even price ranges. It really rounds out the profiling capabilities of the Acme suite, so have a look and consider how it might add some new depth to your trading strategy. Available in the Deluxe and Pro Editions only.

  • Due to the short term nature of the profiles created in this study, the only tick data is supported to provide maximum precision and to facilitate usage on all bar types.
  • Profiles can optionally display the traditional 1-sigma value area, and value area widths are configurable.
  • Profiles can face left or right, and an outline can be (optionally) drawn around the profile range.
  • Profiles can display volume at price (contracts/shared traded) on the profile in 2 different styles (Pro Edition only).
  • Extends naked VPOCs over subsequent bars or blocks until that price is tagged in a later profile and naked VPOCs can have optional price labels next to the chart price scale.
  • Shows an optional volume and range summary below each profile.
  • As with the other Volume Profile (VP) studies, all colors and widths can be finely tuned to integrate into your existing charting scheme.

Interpreting Session Profile Summaries

The session summary, as noted above, displays key at-a-glance metrics. Note that there will be sometimes be rounding errors in the percentage calculations. These figures are intended to be used at-a-glance and not in detailed study. Here is an example session for the ES:

∑ 2133 v 2891K (72%) – the total contracts/shares traded (in thousands) during the session vs the average for the period (in sessions) you specified in the indicator parameters. In parentheses is the total session volume divided by the of the average total (e.g. 2133/2891 = 72%).

↕ 24.00 v 35.1875pts (68%) – the total session range vs the average session range for the period you specified in the indicator parameters. In parentheses is the session range divided by the of the average range.

] 9.75 v 17.38pkt (56%) - the total IB range vs the average IB range for the period you specified in the indicator parameters. In parentheses is the session IB range divided by the of the average IB range.

Gap: +6.25pts - the distance, in points, between the last RTH close and the current RTH open. Both gaps up and gaps down are prefixed with a plus sign or a minus sign as appropriate.

Acme Volume Profile Microcomp

Need to profile longer spans of time than a session but don’t need a full-on composite? Well then, the micro-composite is just the ticket. Available in the StandardDeluxe and Pro Editions only.

  • Generates profiles with  minute data or tick data for those who require both maximum speed and maximum precision.
  • Profiles can optionally display the traditional 1-sigma value area, and value area widths are configurable.
  • Profiles can display volume at price (contracts/shared traded) on the profile in 2 different styles (Pro Edition only).
  • New! Profiles can be created automatically from regularly occurring calendar events including weeks, months and years (Pro Edition only).
  • Profiles can be attached to a specific date or the current date. This is very handy for creating a weekly MC, for example, without having to change the attachment date on each new session.
  • The span of time covered by the MC can be outlined in your choice of colors, widths and styles, if desired.
  • A summary is displayed below the profile and includes the total volume, tick range and span of time included in the MC.
  • The MC’s naked VPOC can be displayed, and then hidden once touched by price after the end date of the MC.
  • Multiple micro-composites (MCs) can be added to the same chart, with configurable time spans attached to any date on the chart (see below).
  • MC profiles can face left or right.
  • MC width and all colors are configurable for seamless integration into virtually any chart color scheme you can dream up.

Acme Volume Profile Composite

Last but most definitely not least, the composite profile is in for the long-ish haul. Most appropriate for profiling a few weeks to a few years’ worth of volume, the Acme Volume Profile Composite helps you see accepted and “unfair” prices from the proverbial 30,000 foot view. If you need to look at the big picture, then this is the study for you.  Available in the StandardDeluxe and Pro Editions only.

Not sure what’s entailed in creating a volume composite? Watch the screencast.

  • As with most of the long-ish term profiles, composites can be generated with  minute data or tick data for those who require both maximum speed and maximum precision.
  • Profiles can optionally display the traditional 1-sigma value area, and value area widths are configurable.
  • This study can automatically mark composite peaks and valleys with configurable sensitivity, colors and labeling. Labeling can be turned on or off, attached left or right. Deluxe and Pro Editions only.
  • Standard and Deluxe Editions have one display mode (Normal), and Pro Edition composites have 3 display modes: Normal, which starts from a specific date and spans into the infinite future; Rewind, which allows DVR-like real time deconstruction and reconstruction of dated (aka Normal) composites; and Dynamic, which will display a composite of just the bars that are actually visible on the chart. Stretch, pan or scroll the chart to control the data shown in the composite, bar-by-bar. See the Rewind and Dynamic modes in action in this screencast.
  • Composites can optionally display a VPOC trace line in the same fashion as the session profile.
  • Composite start date is now shown in the bottom left or right side corner of the chart. Start data label can be hidden, if desired.
  • Multiple composites can be stacked, re-sized and colored to present different time spans on the same chart.
  • Composites can be attached to the left or right side of the chart (see below).
  • Histogram/composite width and colors are configurable.

Acme Volume Profile Evolution

Many of the other volume profiling studies in this pack are all about ticks, minutes, hours and sessions, but the VP Evolution is all about weeks, months and years. Like it’s time-at-price companion study, the Acme TPO Evolution, the VP Evolution uses 3 essential dimensions - rangewidth and color-tuned time - to help you view the big-picture auction action. Available in the Pro Edition only.

Some feature highlights:

  • Designed specifically for reading auctions on the important-to-humans durations of weeksmonths and years.
  • Displays important auction “landmarks” on the profiles, including the period open, high, low, mid, close, POC, pivot point and value area.
  • Displays key period profile metrics on the summary such as rangewidth and area (TPO count) relative to a configurable moving average. See below for details.
  • Like most all the Acme Volume Profiles, the VP Evolution can be built with either minute or tick data.
  • Features a map-style time/color legend that can be placed in any of the four corners of the chart.
  • Profiles can face left or right, and can be used on the same chart as the long-term VP or TPO studies for easy comparison and confluence-finding.
  • Weeksmonths and years can be combined to form micro-composites. For example, 2 week profiles can be created to create semi-monthly profiles or 4 months can be combined to create quarterly profiles.
  • Note this is a long term study that analyzes and displays a tremendous amount of data. Be aware that loading and scrolling may take a a bit of extra time for very long-term charts, depending on your hardware. Additionally, it can only be used on weekmonth or year bars.
  • As with the other long-term studies, this one must be used with the Default 24/7 session template in order to capture and display the full range of data.

Acme Volume Value Channel

This one is a specialized price-volume study which allows traders to track just the volume value area of their choosing, in real time as it develops. In some ways it’s the hyper-minimalist’s volume profile, and it’s a perfect compliment to both the VPOC “value candle” study in this pack and the Volume Impression for value-oriented traders and/or traders of naturally mean-reverting instruments.  Available in the Pro Edition only.

  • As with the other volume profile studies, value areas can be generated with  minute data or tick data for those who require both maximum speed and maximum precision.
  • Value area width is configurable. The default setting is the traditional 1-sigma range (68.2%), but value area channels from 1-99% can be displayed. Multiple value channels, each with a different width, can be layered on a chart to further enhance a value-based trading strategy.
  • The previous RTH session’s value area can be optionally projected onto the next RTH session.
  • Up to 2 extension levels can be specified to assist in gauging how far price has moved away from value at a glance.
  • As with the other studies in this pack, all colors and widths can be finely tuned to integrate into your existing charting scheme.

Acme Volume Profile VPOC

Yet another specialized study in the Acme Volume Profile lineup, the VPOC study displays only the  the per-bar volume point of control and (optionally the) value area – clearly, simply and flexibly. Available in the Pro Edition only.

  • Because of the short-term nature of this study, there is no option to use minute data. Only tick data is used in order to maximize accuracy.
  • May be used on any built-in NinjaTrader bar type of any periodicity.
  • Allows several marking shapes, including solid and hollow squares, solid and hollow circles as well as lines/hashes.
  • Optional value area widths are configurable.
  • The price of the bar VPOC can optionally be displayed below the bar.
  • An optional trace line which links the bar-to-bar VPOCs can be displayed to aid in bigger-picture pattern recognition.
  • All colors, widths and opacities can be finely tuned.

How-To: Setting Up Long Term Profiles

Setting up long term profiles is actually very easy. It only takes just a couple of steps and, except for selecting the period, they are the same for weekly, monthly and yearly time frames.

  • Connect to your data provider.
  • Create a new chart. In this example, we’ll use the ES. Of course, you can use any instrument you like.
  • On the chart Data Series window in the Period section on the right, select Week for the Type, and 1 or more for the Value.
  • Next, in the Data section, select 90 for the Days to load parameter. You can always add more days later, but this will get you going quickly.
  • Still in the Data section, select Default 24/7 as the session template. This is important. Long term profiles are the only type with which you should use this template. If you select a session template that does not match your instrument it’s likely that you will see nothing at all on your chart or you won’t see all the volume for the bar range. And it’ll be confusing, no doubt.
  • Click OK to create your chart. At this point the settings on the left should have produced something very similar to what is shown on the right:

Acme Volume Profile - Long Term Weekly

Acme Volume Profile - Long Term Weekly Bars

  • Add the Acme Volume Profile study to the chart.
  • … and you’re done!
